London Online Hotel Bookings

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

As Britain’s largest city and one of Europe’s finest attractions, London is a great destination for a weekend break or a short holiday, and also makes a great base for exploring the rest of the country, thanks to the excellent road, rail, and air transport links it enjoys. It’s also ideally placed for anyone looking at using it as a stopping-off point for short flights over to Amsterdam, Paris, or Brussels. But with so much to see and do in London, you’ll have your hands full.

London is justly famed for its shopping, which is among the best to be found anywhere in the world. From high-end boutiques to famous street markets, London shopping is as varied as you could wish – from the jewellers of Bond Street to the vibrant, lively Carnaby Street, with all manner of discoveries to be made in between. The main shopping areas are around Oxford Street, where you will find Harvey Nichol’s, among many, many others – and also Knightsbridge, which has a plethora of upmarket shopping options, not least the world-famous Harrods.

For these reasons as well as others, it is best to try and stay as close to the centre of town as possible; London is a big city and getting in and out from the suburbs can be time-consuming. However, like any European capital, the closer to the centre you are, the more expensive accommodations will tend to be. There are genuine bargains to be had, if you are willing to spend a little time shopping around for online hotel bookings, but you should be aware that the standard of budget hotels is extremely variable. London is one of the more expensive cities and prices tend to be accordingly high.

There are any number of attractions in London for all the family, and it is a sensational destination for anyone interested in history. It would be impossible to do justice to the many essential sights that any visitor to London should try and see, but highlights include Buckingham Palace, which is open to visitors during August and September, the Tower of London with its famous Beefeater guards, and London Zoo, widely considered to be among the finest in the world. Other attractions include Madame Tussaud’s, the famous waxworks on Baker Street, Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben… the choices are endless.

In the evenings, enjoy one of London’s thousands of restaurants, with every kind of food imaginable from the home-grown to the exotic, and catering to all tastes and budgets. London is well known as a meeting-place for cultures from all over the world, and this is reflected in its cuisine – going out for a curry in Brick Lane is as English as fish and chips. It also boasts some of the finest restaurants in all of Europe, so if fine dining is more your style, then you will be spoilt for choice.

The other great attraction of London nightlife is the West End, with its famous Theatreland, the focus for all manner of plays and shows. The finest actors from all over the world flock to London to tread the boards at one of the famous old theatres like the Old Vic or the Prince of Wales, and West End musicals are noted for their exuberance and originality. Many a hit show started out in this small corner of the capital, so get in there first before the crowds do!

Thanks to online booking services, it’s easier than ever to book a break in London. Online hotel bookings take a lot of the hassle and stress out of organising your trip, and help you plan your journey with complete confidence.

Which London Hotels Are Best For Attending The Theatre?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Are you planning a trip to England and wondering which London hotels are best for attending the theatre? Are you looking for a super cultural experience? The capital of England and the United Kingdom is the European Union’s most populous city and home to some 7.5 million people, well over 3,000 museums and more than 100 theatres.

Whether you are a theatre buff or just looking for an evening of excitement and entertainment, London is the place for you. At any given time, you will find offerings from Shakespeare to Mary Poppins, Lion King to the Blue Man Group, Guys and Dolls to Monty Python’s Spamalot. Prices are anywhere from affordable to expensive. Whether you go alone or with a group of friends, you’ll find excitement and options.

You may be asking yourself; which London hotels are best for attending the theatre? That depends on your interests and your wallet. First, you will want to decide which of the many plays you want to see. You might want to stay close to one or more of the theatres. Perhaps you prefer to stay in a more central location, near public transportation (such as the “Tube”, London’s subway) so you can get around and do some sightseeing during the day. London offers options for everyone, whether you prefer a boutique hotel or a Bed & Breakfast. Alone, with your partner or in a group, you will find the city has endless possibilities. Some London hotels also offer packages that include theatre tickets. If you and a group of friends want to see some shows together, check with the hotel. Some offer special group rates for 10 to 12 or more.

While theatre is a highlight, London has so much more to offer. Besides the Globe Theatre and Royal Opera House, you have Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. If history and culture are more of interest, do not miss the British Museum. For art, it is the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art. Been looking for a man of mystery? Check out the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Maybe you want to see the changing of the guard, or you may go shopping at Harrods or Harvey Nichols, where Princess Di used to shop. Like music? From symphonies to musicals, you will find something that you enjoy. In this financial and cultural capital, the list of possibilities goes on ad infinitum.

Easy to reach, London has five international airports and a large shipping port. People from diverse ethnic groups make London, giving the city a special energy and special culinary delights.

If London has a weakness, it might be the weather: mild but damp year round. However, nothing will dampen your enthusiasm for the many theatre and other opportunities and activities the city offers. Whatever you do in London and whichever London hotels you choose, your stay is sure to be memorable!

New Year Breaks in Scotland

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Hogmanay – a very special time in Scotland. No-one celebrates New Year like the Scots!

In England we celebrate on New Year Eve but are then back at work on January 2nd. Not so in Scotland – the celebrations are such that an extra day’s holiday is required to recover!

It is not widely known, but Christmas was banned in Scotland for almost 400 years until the 1950s. The Protestant Reformation in the 17th century was responsible for this – Christmas was seen as a Popish or Catholic feast and banned by the Kirk. So people celebrated instead at New Year with a party and present giving. Thus began the great Scottish New Year tradition!

New Year celebrations always include the countdown to midnight and then a rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’. This wonderful little song was penned by Robert Burns and is traditionallly sung whilst holding hands with your fellow party goers.

First Footing is still popular in Scotland – indeed I have experienced it for myself, the last guest not leaving till dawn!! To bring good luck to the house, the first foot after midnight should be a dark man (no blond Vikings welcome!) and he, and all guests, should bring with them a little present, be it whisky, shortbread, flowers or whatever. Good luck is then assured for the next year!

So where can you go to experience a traditional Scottish New Year? Most country hotels and inns offer New Year breaks and of course, the Edinburgh hotels offer New Year breaks in the capital city, famous for the huge street party that takes place in the city centre every New Years Eve.

A New Year break in the country in a cosy inn or hotel, with crackling log fire to keep the winter chill out, is also very popular. Most hotels offer entertainment on New Years Eve, be it a casino night, dancing, murder mystery or a sumptuous banquet. And at midnight of course, a wee dram and Auld Lang Syne!

City of New York

Friday, February 26th, 2010

New York City, officially named the City of New York, is the most populous city in the United States, and the most densely populated major city in North America. The city is at the center of international finance, politics, entertainment, and culture, and is one of the world’s major global cities (along with London, Tokyo and Paris) with a virtually unrivaled collection of museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and stock exchanges. The city is also home to the United Nations, along with all of the international missions associated with it.

History

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the New York City area was inhabited by the Lenape people, including such tribes as the Manahattoes, Canarsies and Raritan. Major events in New York history include¢ In 1524 the first European explorer enters New York Harbor¢ European settlement begins with the following the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson¢ Founding of the Dutch fur trading settlement in Lower Manhattan in 1613 later called New Amsterdam¢ English ships captured the city without struggle in 1664¢ The Dutch formally ceded New York to the English in the Treaty of Breda at the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667¢ The city was renamed New York, after James, Duke of York, and became a royal colony in 1685¢ After the Civil War, the rate of immigration from Europe grew steeply, and New York became the first stop for millions seeking a new and better life in the United States, a role acknowledged by the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886¢ In two separate actions in 1874 and 1895, New York City (and New York County) annexed sections of southern Westchester County known as the Bronx¢ In 1898, New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day.¢ 9/11 changed the political map of the worldPlace of interest

Tourism is a major local industry, with hundreds of attractions and 39 million tourists visiting the city each year on average. Many visitors make it a point to visit Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, United Nations Headquarters, the American Museum of Natural History, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other attractions. There are over 28,000 acres (113 km²) of parkland found throughout New York City, comprising over 1,700 separate parks and playgrounds. The best known of these is Central Park, which is one of the finest examples of landscape architecture in the world, as well as a major source of recreation for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Other major parks in the city include Riverside Park, Battery Park, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow-Corona Park, Washington Square Park, and Forest Park.

Museums & Art Galleries

New York is a city of great museums with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s assemblage of historic art, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum’s 20th century collection, and the American Museum of Natural History and its Hayden Planetarium focusing on the sciences. There are also many smaller specialty museums, from El Museo del Barrio with a focus on Latin American cultures to the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. A number of the city’s museums are located along the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

In addition to these museums, the city is also home to a vast array of spaces for opera, symphony, and dance performances. The largest of these is Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which is actually a complex of buildings housing 12 separate companies, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Other notable performance halls include Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. New York City boasts a highly active and influential theater district, which is centered around Times Square in Manhattan. It serves both as the center of the American theater industry, and as a major attraction for visitors from around the world. Broadway theaters are considered to be of the highest quality in the world.

Shopping

Shopping is popular with many visitors, with Fifth Avenue being a famous shopping corridor for luxury items. Macy’s, the nation’s largest department store, and the surrounding area of Herald Square are a major destination for more moderately-priced goods. In recent years 23rd Street has become a major location for “big-box” retailers. In southern Manhattan, Greenwich Village is home to hundreds of independent music and book stores, while the East Village continues to prevail as purveyors of all things “strange” and unusual which you can’t find anywhere else. The “diamond district” (located on 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues) is the city’s main location for jewelry shopping, and SoHo, formerly the center of the New York art scene, is now famous for high-priced clothing boutiques, and the art galleries are now concentrated in Chelsea. There are also large shopping districts found in Downtown Brooklyn and along Queens Boulevard in Queens.

Food & Drink

New York is the best restaurant town in USA and one of the finest in the world. New York has literally thousands of restaurants to choose from (more than 25,000, in fact), encompassing nearly every cuisine in the world. Some of the big names are Eleven Madison Park, The River Café, Boat Basin Café, Veritas. Like restaurants, thousands of bars and cafes are there in the city. A few old noteworthy among those are: McSorleys Old Ale House, Revival, Push Café and White Horse Tavern.

Universities

New York City is served by the publicly run City University of New York (CUNY), the largest urban university in the United States, which has a number of campuses throughout the five boroughs. The city is also home to a number of other institutions of higher learning, some of national or even international reputation, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Manhattan College, New York University, the Juilliard School, The Cooper Union, Marymount Manhattan College and The New School. New York City is also a major center of academic medicine. Manhattan contains the campuses of the world-class Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and NYU Medical Center and their medical schools. New York City is home to several of the nation’s top schools of art and design, including Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parsons School of Design

Sports

Although in much of the rest of the country American football has become the most popular professional sport, in New York City baseball arguably still stirs the most passion and interest. A “Subway Series” between city teams is a time of great excitement, and any World Series championship by either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets is considered to be worthy of the highest celebration, including a ticker-tape parade for the victorious team.

Hotels & Accommodation

The City of New York is known as the “city that never sleeps”, but its visitors have to. The city hosts a large number of accommodations options.

Luxury Hotels

New York has many “grand dames,” classic elegant hotels that have been around for years and endured majestically. The St. Regis, the Waldorf, Tribeca Grand Hotel, Ritz-Carlton New York, Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers – are some to mention about.

Budget Hotels

Besides all those luxury hotels, a large number of budget hotels are available in New York City. They are comfortable, homely and light weight for the pocket. Some of them to mention are – The Whitehouse Hotel of New York, The Pioneer, Chelsea Center, Guesthouse and Harlem YMCA. Except these hotels and guesthouses, Skyline Hotel and Travel Inn are rare exception among affordable hotels for their services and facilities.

Some helpful websites for this purpose are:

Transport

The airport authority owns and operates the four major airports in the New York City area, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Jamaica, Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, La Guardia Airport in Flushing, and Teeterboard Airport in Teeterboard, New Jersey.Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. Other than cabs, New York City has a mass transit system. In addition to these, city residents rely on hundreds of bus lines, both publicly and privately operated. Many private ferries are run by NY Waterway, which provides several lines across the Hudson River, New York Water Taxi, with lines connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, and other operators

Choosing a Full Service Hotel Vs. a Condominium Resort

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The thought of having someone at your service 24 hours a day is appealing whatever your reason for travel – whether for a vacation, business, or to visit your family. For some, staying in a hotel is just a place to rest their head while to others it is the destination itself. While some look for clean rooms and a good restaurant, others may prefer to have a variety of activities to keep them occupied during their stay.

For that reason hotels are as different as the travellers who stay in them. A traveller may find an Inn near the airport very suitable while another insists on 5 stars in the heart of London. Budget hotels exist for the person who is travelling on a strict budget and there are hotels which cater to the businessman and that offer meeting rooms and other business related services.

Resort hotels are popular with families travelling on holiday, while others prefer the quiet exclusivity of a boutique hotel overlooking the Swiss Alps. Boutique hotels offer a more personalized service, smaller and high end, they are often found in urban areas which give guests an opportunity to explore a different side of the city they are visiting.

What they all have in common is goods and services, in this case, full services. Hotels comprise a very large section of the establishment in the hospitality industry and are classified as offering full-service or limited-service, or no-service. Full-service hotels offer their guests a host of different services which include at least one restaurant as well as beverage options, be it a coffee bar, cocktail bar or lounge as well as room service. The larger hotels which cater for exclusive clientele quite often have retail shops available for their guests who can find daily newspapers, gifts or cosmetics.

On top of this, many full-service hotels offer laundry or valet services, a concierge who can arrange theatre tickets and taxis as well as a host of other services. Some boast swimming pools as well as beauty salons, and you may even be able to find a fitness or health centre.

How are Hotels Categorised

Full service hotels, such as a conference hotel, can be distinguished from one another by different features, or services they offer. Conference hotels provide meeting rooms and accommodation for out of town delegates as well as full banqueting services. While there are no hotels categorised as “wedding hotels,” very large weddings are easily hosted in this type of hotel as they not only provide accommodation for the wedding party, but also host the wedding in beautifully decorated rooms while providing full catering services.

There are hotels dedicated to casino gambling which offer legal gambling on the same premises along with all the services you may want to find in a full service hotel. Some casino hotels also contain conference or wedding facilities.

Merging Full service with Condominium-Style Rooms

Condominium resorts are becoming more popular and quite a few luxury full service hotels are adding this option to their services. They tend to be very large establishments and because of this are usually managed by luxury hotel chains. But they can also be independently owned and then affiliated with a hotel chain through franchise agreements. This allows them the opportunity to participate in a national reservation service and gives the impression that they belong to a larger group. The main point is that they provide guests with the services and amenities offered by a full service hotel.

More often referred to as resort hotels, this type of accommodation is directed toward families on vacation, but also offers a guest the option of longer stays. They are often set in exotic locations, but can also be found in cities.

These offer luxurious accommodations comprising of apartments complete with kitchens, living and dining areas and separated bedrooms. They offer guests a host of recreational facilities which are suited to locations they are set in. Typically you can find these resorts in vacation destinations like Disney World for instance, but most often they are close to nature such as the sea or the mountains.

Among the facilities they offer are swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts or other sporting activities like skiing, depending on location. They cater for your children by offering game rooms and supervised entertainment while the adults can make use of beauty spas or health centres.

These types of destinations are a great way to combine business with pleasure, and make perfect conference venues. While delegates are kept busy attending meetings during the day, their families are free to explore and partake in the many activities that are designed to keep them entertained and amused. In the evening, baby sitters can be arranged while you dine.

Due to the nature of their business, occupancy may fluctuate greatly with the seasons, and because of this you may find great off season offers and other incentives.
