How to Polish your Presentations

When you speak, you represent a brand, the brand of you. How you talk, walk, and look reflect upon that brand. What does your body language say about you? Does it say you’re trustworthy, confident, and competent, or just the opposite? While there are thousands of books and articles devoted to body language, how many have you read lately? Sometimes too much information is a bad thing.

Just try to follow this type of habits like: -

• Nothing fancy required, just a firm handshake with two or three shakes usually does the trick. Avoid squeezing like a vice. The key is to maintain eye contact while shaking hands. Finally, a warm smile adds just the right touch.

• Keep your weight balanced on both feet, stand tall, eyes ahead. When sitting, avoid slumping into the fold of your chair or leaning back. Watch as people respond to you differently.

• Maintain eye contact 70% to 80% of the time. Make everyone feel included and important. Look at the person you’re speaking to you. If you’re addressing a small or large group, break the room into three parts. Focus on one individual, make a point, shift your gaze to another part of the room, make a point, and do the same for the rest of the room.

• Simply avoid putting anything in between you and the listener. Keep your hands and arms unfolded, don’t hold a binder, and try to avoid standing behind a podium when possible.

• Feel free to use your hands in a way that feels natural. Videotape yourself speaking to see whether your gestures appear natural and comfortable. You might discover that you use few, if any, gestures. Free yourself!

• Pay attention to small, potentially distracting body movements, like tapping your toes or fidgeting with your fingers, pens, or coins — all signs of nervous energy. Look and sound more engaged by channeling that energy into face, voice, and hand gestures.

• Maintain eye contact with your listeners at least 90% of the time. It’s appropriate to glance at your notes or slides from time to time, but only for a few seconds and only as a reminder of where to go next. You are speaking for the benefit of your listeners. Speak to them, not the slides.

• Find a clothing store and salesperson whose recommendations you trust. Always dress appropriately for the culture, but a little better than everyone else.

• Great communicators always rehearse important presentations. Most bad presentations are the result of failing to practice talking out loud.

• Great communicators are not stiff. Standing at attention like a soldier waiting for orders might work for the army, but it makes presentations tedious.

• Don’t write too many words on the slide. A good rule of thumb is no more than four words across and six lines down. For slides with more content, do not recite the slide word for word. Include a story,

• Edit everything you say. Do you spend five minutes saying something that you could otherwise say in 30 seconds? What can you cut out? Be thorough, yet concise in all manners of communication, including phone conversations, emails and formal presentations.

• Tell your listeners why they should be excited about your content. Give your audience a reason to care.

A Global Catastrophe is Coming?

It is estimated that about 2100 the average temperature of earth’s surface will be between 1.5 and 6 grades higher than in 1980. ¿who are the responsibles and what can we do?

Our planet is getting warmer: that’s a reality. The last ten years have been the hottest; scientifics have announced that in future it would be warmer. And, as always, human beings are the main responsibles: we exert a direct impact over warming process, also known as “greenhouse effect”.

Greenhouse effect is an increase of greenhouse gases concentration: carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorineflourinecarbonate (CFC), methane (CH4), nitrogen oxide (N2O) and troposphere ozone.

In small concentrations these gases are necessary for our survival. Solar energy come in through them, reaches the earth and return as infrared energy. At that moment greenhouse gases catch them and keep the infrared radiation heat, as a greenhouse.

But in major quantities, the main consequence of greenhouse effect is the atmosphere global warming.

Why?…because contaminant gases (or greenhouse), as carbon dioxide, provoke that solar energy keep trapped in atmosphere. And it takes only a slight modification of temperature to break the nature equilibrium.

Sea water will evaporate, in other parts will be torrential rain, floods, hurricanes, droughts, heat waves and freeze…among other natural disasters.

An important concern

According to different scientific studies, supported by ONU, it is estimated that in 2100m average temperature of earth will be between 1,5 and 6 grades higher than in 1980. Temperatures are increasing at global scale, and the recorded 15 hottest years have been since 1980.

This is the main concern of scientifics, because besides all the aforementioned disasters it could be famine and epidemic, ice floes melting, flora and fauna disappearing and Caribbean Island flooding.

What is worse is that we are “collaborating” with global warming by using fossil fuel (coal, oil and its derivates as paraffin, liquefied gas and benzine), allowing industrial contamination, among others, and forests and wet lands destruction.

It is believed that if temperature continues to elevate, global warming is going to uneven distributed. Continental zones are going to be hottest than sea zones.

There are three different ways of gardening. One is to have your garden inside your house. The other is to use whatever space your garden has and plant your crop outside. The third way is to do your gardening under glass. This is called greenhouse gardening.

Greenhouse gardening is not that different from your average outside gardening. The main consideration that you need to think about is controlling the temperature of your greenhouse. Remembering that plants thrive at temperatures that are slightly lower than what is in our houses and that they require a much higher humidity than we are used to, will let you see that your greenhouse plants get the proper environment.

The best way to ensure the right amount of sunlight and heat for your greenhouse is to build it in a spot that can take advantage of the maximum amount of sunlight right throughout the year. This is especially important during the spring and fall seasons as the sun is at its lowest point in the southern sky. You should try and have your greenhouse located where the sun’s rays will reach through a southeastern to southwestern direction.

To ensure that ventilation flows throughout the greenhouse you should space your plants evenly around the gardening areas. One method of having good ventilation is to open the greenhouse doors in the morning and close them in the late afternoon. This is a fine method in the winter time as well, providing that you keep the weather report in mind and make sure that winter frost does not creep into your greenhouse in the late afternoon.

The other way is very simple. Just hose down the entire greenhouse floor and then open the ceiling vents. This method cools down the entire greenhouse very quickly.

For whatever plants that you have in your greenhouse, commercial potting soil works fine. Rather than having your plants in pots or containers you should grow them in large tray beds. The best greenhouse gardening soil mixtures include fir bark, sand, peat moss, vermiculite and perlite for drainage.

As with all types of gardening you must see that your plants receive adequate water. Greenhouse gardening means that care must be taken not to over water your plants. A climate controlled greenhouse regulates the moisture level with the greenhouse.

Planting in a greenhouse means using your imagination. You should have plenty of space so that you can pot new plants and move around seeing to the health of your other plants.

You will need to plant vegetables like carrots, beets, turnips and other root vegetables in a deep box tray which will fit under benches. Lettuce and other low growing leafy vegetables can be planted in tubs with vegetables that have a taller growth. Vegetables like peas, cucumbers and tomatoes do well in tub type containers.

The Department of Energy actually has a calculator to tell you how much greenhouse gases you produce on a daily basis.

WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT? The amount of greenhouse gas you generate by an activity or process. In other words, what impact you make on the environment measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide (C02). This calculator, compliments of the Department of Energy, can be found at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/ind_calculator.html and lets you calculate your own carbon footprint. How much greenhouse gas do you produce while going through your daily activities such as driving, electricity use, and heating your home?

WHAT EXACTLY ARE GREENHOUSE GASES? Bottom line: Without Greenhouse Gases to maintain Earth’s temperature, it would be too cold for habitation. We need Greenhouse Gases but…we’re tromping heavily with our carbon footprint boots and that’s making the temperature too warm. Hence, the Greenhouse Effect mutates into Global Warming and that’s taken us from “We really should consider renewable energy” to “We MUST implement renewable energy NOW”.
