3 Important Greenhouse Heater Facts For Amateur Gardeners

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Temperature may changes many times in a day. During the nights, it can drop to very low levels which won’t be healthy for all plants. Hence, to maintain temperature at the correct level for plant growth, generally greenhouse heaters are required. For selecting the correct heater, one must look into capability of producing correct temperatures during cold in winter and nights, but also in the money needed to installing and hence run it.

1. Different Kinds of Heaters For Greenhouses
- Electric heaters. This type of heater is suitable for tiny greenhouse structures. They can maintain the specified temperature levels. Also they don’t produce fumes and also there is no use for ventilation while using these.

- Gas heaters. These heaters are run by natural or bottled gases, they are less efficient when compared to electric heaters. Waste products while combustion are put back in the greenhouse and hence ventilation is needed while using these. These heaters must be located in a safe and secure location and also need replacement and monitoring.

- Paraffin heaters. These are the very basic among all the three. These require constant wick trimming and replacement. They also require fuel , thus, fumes enter into greenhouse and hence need lot of ventilation. These also reduce the risk due to frost damage and also prove to be emergency standby.

2. Types Of Heater Mounting
- Hanging. This heater is mounted in the ceiling or plainly just hung down from it. It’s advantageous to implement since less floor space is needed. They must be hung high so as not be an irritation or obstruction.

- Wall. These kinds of heaters are placed in the wall and also vent outside the greenhouse. Less or no floor space is needed but the place in front must be clear.

- Floor. These kinds are not mounted since they have a stand and hence can be located anywhere in the greenhouse floor. The disadvantage is that it takes up a lot of floor area.

3. Types Of Heater Combustion
- Open. These types of heaters make use of air inside for combustion needs. So long as air doesn’t contain contaminants, this works fine. Generally flammable liquids msut not be kept near the open heater since the burner isn’t sealed.

- Separated. The gas heater makes use of this type of combustion mechanism where it makes use of air outside for combustion needs. The burner is sealed in order to trap air outside. Exhaust pipe is placed outside the this structure.

- Sealed. These kinds are like the separated type. It’s burner is totally sealed in and also there isn’t way use the air inside. Some sealed combustion heaters also use direct venting for exhaust and also intake.

Heater Vents
- Unvented. Unvented heaters, the combustion produced gases are released into heated location. They are for temporary use due to sensitivity of plants.

- Gravity. Exhausted air in this kind must rise via pipes and are released outside, hence, vents msut be vertical. Air put out has to be gotten back by air outside.

- Power. The power vented ones have blowers which push air via pipes to outside the structure. These vents can be made horizontally or vertically, the vent pipe is smaller and hence makes it efficient.

- Direct. These kinds of venting are for sealed combustion types. They have one vent pipe for both exhaust and inlet ; with one pipe being inside another.

Do You Really Need Supplements – Know the Fact

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The health market is flooded with nutritional health supplements but do you think you really need a supplement? This article has given the real fact on whether you need a supplement or not?

After watching a promotional presentation of a recently launched nutrition supplement, I wondered how many normal persons would begin to take them and how many of those people really needed them. Not only I but many of my friends asked an expert on nutrition the same questions. The expert said that misguided information about supplements is leading more people who need less or no supplements to take them. For example, recently a body builder’s comment in a health program on TV informed the viewers that one does not get adequate proteins by eating food and therefore one requires supplements!

The fact is that those who really need supplements are the hungry or undernourished people who can’t afford to buy them. On the other hand, those who can afford to buy supplements and do take them regularly do not really need them because they can get adequate nutrients from natural foods if they balance their food intake well. Supplements are best utilized by patients in a clinical setup when properly prescribed by the dietitian.

Most of the supplements are available through network marketing and not directly from the shop. Those who sell or promote these supplements claim that product helps to prevent a disease or disorder or promote healthy function.

Though many have long lists of ingredients and nutritional values printed on the labels, most consumers either do not read or don’t understand the terms. Some studies show that a nutrient in excess can actually cause harm. The bottom line is that nothing can replace the goodness of natural foods and their nutrients. So the next time a supplement is pushed into your palms, think before buying it. One should ask for professional advice from a qualified nutritionist before buying it.

The health books designed by health and fitness experts are better option than supplements. This is because they focus on finding natural treatment of the health problems.

Far From the Madding Crowd

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Every once in a while we need a break. We just need to get away from the monotonous routine of everyday life and its commitments and challenges and tuck ourselves away where no one could find us.

While weekend getaways are rejuvenating, they are short lived and leave one thirsting for more. Whenever possible, people escape to surroundings that are away not just in term of distance but also in atmosphere and ambience from where they live and where they work.

Holiday destinations galore in the US and while places like the Texan countryside require a different frame of mind, other places like Miami and Florida are favorites for the sheer closeness yet faraway quality they have and the multiple delights they offer.

Disneyland is favoured by many as it offers not only all the fun a child could dream of but also turn adults into kids making them let their hair down and throw all caution to the winds.

If not too short on time, South American coastline is replete with places that invite one to stay forever. The Bahamas, the Hawaii, the West Indies, Bermuda, etc are places that one doesn’t forget even after one is back. The tourism sector in these regions offers the opportunity for a visitor to soak in the sun the sand and their deliciously sedentary life and bizarre culture to his heart’s content. There are sites to visit and activities to get indulged, such as scuba diving. There is also a paradise of culinary delicacies to dig into. The South American holiday is the ideal balm to soothe frayed nerves.

The target of a holiday is relaxation and an ideal choice is a place with moderate climate that doesn’t make you either shiver in your woolens or keep digging into the bag for sunscreen cream. In this respect the Tropical, Caribbean holiday tops the list of the wanderer. It is a perfect time spent in a perfect setting, more so if one has the perfect company to enjoy the exotic experience with. The taste of salsa, the beat of samba and abundant sunshine compel you to promise that you would come back.

Where Sales Meets Service: Up-selling and Cross-selling Made Fun & Easy!

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

While navigating an online bookstore I came across the James Frey book popularized by Oprah’s book club: A Million Little Pieces. As I read about this book I was informed that “readers who bought A Million Little Pieces also bought the books Lies My President Told Me and Pinocchio.” Folks, I was being cross-sold, yet I wasn’t cross about it.

The reality of business is that customers want to be sold. They love to buy for their own reasons. Not manipulatively bombarded with sales pitches or indiscriminately pressured with endless offerings, but intelligently informed, guided and suggested with related, logical and natural purchases that further

their goals.

Up-selling and cross-selling are two sales techniques used by professional sales and service staffs to increase sales. Are you making the most of your suggestive selling?

UP with Selling

Up-selling refers to situations where your customer buys a product or service, and you encourage them to spend more for additional features or packages. They are upping the amount they are spending, albeit for more or better services or products.

Consider the customer seeking a point-of-sale solution for handling charge cards, yet opts to purchase a deluxe POS model for more money when learning of additional capabilities, security and flexibility.

You are shopping for a bare-bones SUV. The salesperson infoms you soccer moms tell him they love having the model with the DVD player in the backseat for the kids. Thus you buy that model with a fancy video system and then extended warranty too.

Sales Crossing Ahead

Cross Selling refers to situations where a customer buys a product or service, and is simultaneously sold related items that often complement their purchase.

For example: A customer buys a computer and is then sold training in a bundle.

Ditto when a man buys a suit and is then offered a color coordinated silk tie and dress shirt to go with it.

While we think of these as advanced sales techniques, they are actually rooted in the power of suggestion.

People, once they’ve decided to buy, are naturally swayed by more and better options, additional value, and the excitement following their initial purchase. Many customers don’t know about additional items or options, or how well they complement the initial item they bought. Up-selling enhances their initial purchase, making them more powerful, capable and effective. Cross-selling similarly enhances their purchase, often maximizing its impact on their business.

Suggestive Selling Salient In Our Lives

Quite frankly, we’ve been up-sold and cross-sold every day. And it’s not necessarily a manipulative process.

Consider the following examples:

* “Would you like fries with that order?”

* “For just 49 cents we can super-size that for you.”

* “When you buy 2 you get 1 Free!”

* “Would you like to purchase our extended warranty coverage on this? It’s only….”

I’ve worked with customer service staffs afraid to sell, others who felt it was manipulative and smarmy to sell. Yet here’s a secret: It’s really a form of service!

True professionals are sincerely interested in bridging the gap and delivering great results.

Service Through Sales

When you up-sell and cross-sell:

* You are making informed suggestions as a knowledgeable rep

* You are apprising customers of options they may not be aware of

* You are often anticipating future needs

* It’s a way to further help your customer…to be more powerful, to enjoy more benefits, to maximize the usefulness of the products or services they’re acquiring.

Remember this, when you are the rep who is selling and serving:

* You are in the business of solving problems, generating solutions and making customers happy, or even happier.

* You are the subject matter expert when it comes to the products and services you are representing.

* You are apprising customers of options they may not be aware of

* To the extent you listen and understand the situation of your clients, customers or constituents, you are ideally suited to provide solutions, recommendations and remedies.

* To withhold this from others would be selfish, and poor service.

* Any time you can fulfill more needs, address more issues or solve more problems you are easing your client’s /customer’s life. After all, they already trust you, like you, and are doing business with you.

So, how does one UPSELL or CROSS-SELL? It’s easy.

When You Play Bridge…You Avoid Leaving Money on the Table

After you’ve completed the initial transaction or gotten the initial indication your customer wants to buy, you can then bridge to the Up- or Cross–Sell:

Mr. Rhorbach, while I have you on the line…were you aware you can work in multiple advanced speech manuals at the same time?

Oh, by the way Ms. Kitchel, did you know…that the book you bought for new hire also has a companion CD for just $9 more?

Mr. Young, I’d like to take a moment to…inform you of a new nationwide program just for businesses such as yours…

Incidentally…were you aware that you are 2/3’s of the way toward qualifying for a discount on shipping of your office supplies?

Using BRIDGE statements allows you to transition from your initial sale to up-sells and cross-sells.

Pairing Your Products; String Your Services Together

Look anew at the offerings you’re selling. For each, what is an up-sell? What can you cross-sell with it? Make sure your salespeople know the migration paths so they can suggestively up- and cross-sell with ease.

In closing, I’d like to thank you for your engagement with this material. Before concluding, could I interest any of you in a related article on up-selling and cross-selling? Perhaps you’d prefer a training course on suggestive selling? Shall I customize that for you? Consider yourself super-sized!

As Clint Eastwood would say: “For A Few Dollars More…”

U.s. Aluminum Industry to Help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emission

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The global community is now facing the biggest threat to its existence in the form of global warming. To address the threat of global warming, different industries including the auto industry has taken major steps to reduce the amount of fossil fuel burned and the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. And recently, another industry has expressed dedication to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The aluminum industry announced on March 24th their “Position on Climate Change”. The said action was taken after the meeting of the members of the Aluminum Association.

Patrick Franc, the Chairman of the Aluminum Association, has this to say about the issue: “We believe that it is important for the U.S. aluminum industry to assume a leadership position in this cause for environmental sustainability of our industry and products, on a market-wide and global basis.” Franc is also the president of the ARCO Aluminum.

The industry acknowledged the threat of global warming to the planet as reported by scientists. The industry further concedes that the planet is increasingly becoming warm due to the excessive release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which radiates heat from the sun. The industry also agrees that to combat the issue, greater efforts would have to come from every industry that has mushroomed from all corners of the world.

Government involvement is also urged by the Association. The industry encouraged the legislative body of the United States to enact laws which will recognize the pay off of recycling towards reduction of greenhouse gas emission. The industry reports that the energy invested on the production of aluminum is offset by the reduction of energy need in recycling their products. The energy savings on recycling of aluminum amounts to 95 percent compared to the initial production.

The U.S. aluminum industry has already taken steps towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as according to Steve Larkin, the president of The Aluminum Association. “The aluminum industry in the U.S. has made considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, offering both experience and a positive track record in this cause. Our contributions through recycling and downstream emissions reductions through better, less emitting automobiles will help the United States and other countries protect the environment,” he further emphasizes.

The use of aluminum on vehicle parts such as a Nissan exhaust tip and the body of the vehicle also reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released. This is because aluminum is a lightweight metal and the lighter the vehicle, the less power it needs. And the less power it needs, the less fuel it needs to burn which translates to less emission.

The aluminum industry also recycles these parts and they are supporting the enactment of legislations which will give incentive to companies that recycles aluminum. One form of incentive that they are asking from the government is the tax credit for companies in the aluminum industry.

City of New York

Friday, February 26th, 2010

New York City, officially named the City of New York, is the most populous city in the United States, and the most densely populated major city in North America. The city is at the center of international finance, politics, entertainment, and culture, and is one of the world’s major global cities (along with London, Tokyo and Paris) with a virtually unrivaled collection of museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and stock exchanges. The city is also home to the United Nations, along with all of the international missions associated with it.

History

Long before the arrival of European settlers, the New York City area was inhabited by the Lenape people, including such tribes as the Manahattoes, Canarsies and Raritan. Major events in New York history include¢ In 1524 the first European explorer enters New York Harbor¢ European settlement begins with the following the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson¢ Founding of the Dutch fur trading settlement in Lower Manhattan in 1613 later called New Amsterdam¢ English ships captured the city without struggle in 1664¢ The Dutch formally ceded New York to the English in the Treaty of Breda at the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667¢ The city was renamed New York, after James, Duke of York, and became a royal colony in 1685¢ After the Civil War, the rate of immigration from Europe grew steeply, and New York became the first stop for millions seeking a new and better life in the United States, a role acknowledged by the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886¢ In two separate actions in 1874 and 1895, New York City (and New York County) annexed sections of southern Westchester County known as the Bronx¢ In 1898, New York City took the political form in which it exists to this day.¢ 9/11 changed the political map of the worldPlace of interest

Tourism is a major local industry, with hundreds of attractions and 39 million tourists visiting the city each year on average. Many visitors make it a point to visit Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Wall Street, United Nations Headquarters, the American Museum of Natural History, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Fifth Avenue, and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other attractions. There are over 28,000 acres (113 km²) of parkland found throughout New York City, comprising over 1,700 separate parks and playgrounds. The best known of these is Central Park, which is one of the finest examples of landscape architecture in the world, as well as a major source of recreation for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Other major parks in the city include Riverside Park, Battery Park, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow-Corona Park, Washington Square Park, and Forest Park.

Museums & Art Galleries

New York is a city of great museums with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s assemblage of historic art, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum’s 20th century collection, and the American Museum of Natural History and its Hayden Planetarium focusing on the sciences. There are also many smaller specialty museums, from El Museo del Barrio with a focus on Latin American cultures to the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design. A number of the city’s museums are located along the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

In addition to these museums, the city is also home to a vast array of spaces for opera, symphony, and dance performances. The largest of these is Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which is actually a complex of buildings housing 12 separate companies, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Other notable performance halls include Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. New York City boasts a highly active and influential theater district, which is centered around Times Square in Manhattan. It serves both as the center of the American theater industry, and as a major attraction for visitors from around the world. Broadway theaters are considered to be of the highest quality in the world.

Shopping

Shopping is popular with many visitors, with Fifth Avenue being a famous shopping corridor for luxury items. Macy’s, the nation’s largest department store, and the surrounding area of Herald Square are a major destination for more moderately-priced goods. In recent years 23rd Street has become a major location for “big-box” retailers. In southern Manhattan, Greenwich Village is home to hundreds of independent music and book stores, while the East Village continues to prevail as purveyors of all things “strange” and unusual which you can’t find anywhere else. The “diamond district” (located on 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues) is the city’s main location for jewelry shopping, and SoHo, formerly the center of the New York art scene, is now famous for high-priced clothing boutiques, and the art galleries are now concentrated in Chelsea. There are also large shopping districts found in Downtown Brooklyn and along Queens Boulevard in Queens.

Food & Drink

New York is the best restaurant town in USA and one of the finest in the world. New York has literally thousands of restaurants to choose from (more than 25,000, in fact), encompassing nearly every cuisine in the world. Some of the big names are Eleven Madison Park, The River Café, Boat Basin Café, Veritas. Like restaurants, thousands of bars and cafes are there in the city. A few old noteworthy among those are: McSorleys Old Ale House, Revival, Push Café and White Horse Tavern.

Universities

New York City is served by the publicly run City University of New York (CUNY), the largest urban university in the United States, which has a number of campuses throughout the five boroughs. The city is also home to a number of other institutions of higher learning, some of national or even international reputation, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Manhattan College, New York University, the Juilliard School, The Cooper Union, Marymount Manhattan College and The New School. New York City is also a major center of academic medicine. Manhattan contains the campuses of the world-class Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and NYU Medical Center and their medical schools. New York City is home to several of the nation’s top schools of art and design, including Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Parsons School of Design

Sports

Although in much of the rest of the country American football has become the most popular professional sport, in New York City baseball arguably still stirs the most passion and interest. A “Subway Series” between city teams is a time of great excitement, and any World Series championship by either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets is considered to be worthy of the highest celebration, including a ticker-tape parade for the victorious team.

Hotels & Accommodation

The City of New York is known as the “city that never sleeps”, but its visitors have to. The city hosts a large number of accommodations options.

Luxury Hotels

New York has many “grand dames,” classic elegant hotels that have been around for years and endured majestically. The St. Regis, the Waldorf, Tribeca Grand Hotel, Ritz-Carlton New York, Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers – are some to mention about.

Budget Hotels

Besides all those luxury hotels, a large number of budget hotels are available in New York City. They are comfortable, homely and light weight for the pocket. Some of them to mention are – The Whitehouse Hotel of New York, The Pioneer, Chelsea Center, Guesthouse and Harlem YMCA. Except these hotels and guesthouses, Skyline Hotel and Travel Inn are rare exception among affordable hotels for their services and facilities.

Tours and Sightseeing

To know and see the New York City with no tension way, a number of tour operators are there for travelers help. These tours contain city and outskirt of the city sightseeing. Tours may vary from its contents or theme. It may be a helicopter tour of Big Apple or may be a double-decker bus tour. Some fair tour agencies are there in the city. Tours can be booked from tour agencies or some hotels arrange them for its patrons. Another easy way to book any of these tours is online tour ticket booking. Some helpful websites for this purpose are:

Transport

The airport authority owns and operates the four major airports in the New York City area, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in Jamaica, Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, La Guardia Airport in Flushing, and Teeterboard Airport in Teeterboard, New Jersey.Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. Other than cabs, New York City has a mass transit system. Unlike most of America’s car-oriented urban areas, public transportation is the common mode of travel for the majority of New York City residents. The city is served by an extensive network of parkways and expressways, including four primary Interstate Highways enter the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The world-famous New York City Subway is operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). It is the most extensive subway system in the world. The subway system connects all boroughs except Staten Island, which is served by the Staten Island Railway via the free Staten Island Ferry. In addition to these, city residents rely on hundreds of bus lines, both publicly and privately operated. Many private ferries are run by NY Waterway, which provides several lines across the Hudson River, New York Water Taxi, with lines connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, and other operators

Prostate Supplements: a Great Way to Support Prostate Health

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Prostate problems? According to statistics 1 in every 4 American men above 40 are in the high risk category for health problems associated with the prostate gland. About half the men in the age group of 60 and 80% of the men over 80 are predicted to suffer from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) possibly leading to prostate cancer. And the numbers are growing.

Whether you are below 40 or over 40—educating yourself on the reasons, causes and management of prostate problems could:

  • Help prevent prostate problems
  • Alleviate their symptoms

With statistics showing American men at greater risk and given that prostate cancer is the number one cancer killer among men in our country, the time for you to act is now.

What is the Prostate?
The prostate, a small organ approximately the size of a walnut, found below the bladder, forms a part of the male reproductive organ. The prostate produces semen. At birth the size of the prostate gland is the about the size of a pea. At puberty the prostate doubles in size. After 40, the prostate begins to increase in size because of a change in levels of the male hormone, testosterone.

Understanding the Problem
Change in the levels of the hormone, testosterone affect the size of the prostate. This happens because testosterone is converted into another, more powerful male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate cells. DHT is triggers the division of prostate cells increasing their number. Levels of DHT are known to be 5 times higher in enlarged prostate glands than in those of a normal sized prostate. If the conversion of testosterone to DHT is prevented, BPH may not occur and may even be reversed once it has developed.

Who is at Greater Risk?
It is seen that factors like age, heredity, lifestyle, diet and ethnicity have much to do with prostate related problems. For example, African American men are at more risk than Caucasians; men who live sedentary lives are also at more risk.

Various Options

  1. Treatment with Drugs. This may give temporary relief to prostate problems. As soon as the drug treatment stops the prostate begins to increase in size. Drugs also may have harmful side effects such as headaches, dizziness, tiredness. Some drug treatments may inhibit your sex life and temporarily affect the ability to perform.
  2. Surgery. Not all surgical treatment has turned out to be a permanent solution. The prostate may grow again involving a repeat operation. There is also the risk of inhibitions to your sex life.
  3. Nutritional support through prostate supplements.

Nutrition and Prostate Problems
While heredity and ethnicity are important factors, research has shown that nutrition also plays a critical role in prostate related problems. Studies indicate lack of certain nutrients increases the risk for prostate enlargement. Doctors recommend a healthy diet that includes more fruits and vegetables and cutting down on red meats and saturated fats.

Nutritional Support: Does It Really Work?
Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterol or plant sterol. It is a nutrient found in plant sources like wheat germ, rice bran, flax seeds, peanuts, soybeans, pumpkin seeds and corn oil.

Beta-sitosterol inhibits an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), thereby decreasing the amount of DHT. Since DHT is considered to be responsible for the enlargement of the prostate, beta-sitosterol may help to support normal prostate size.

There are numerous clinical studies that note the inhibiting effects of beta-sitosterol on the growth of the prostate gland and positive benefits in relieving patients of the symptoms of benign prostate hypertrophy.

What Are you Going to Wear at Bridal Shower Party

Friday, February 26th, 2010

If you have ever stood in front of your nicely stocked closet, had a number of discarded outfits beginning to pile up on the bed, and still had no clue what to wear to the occasion that you are already running late for, then you should know that you are not alone! As a matter of fact, there is not one woman alive who cannot boast the same difficulty at one point or another. Of course, the other reason why the outfits are piling up could be the fact that a well-meaning spouse or friend took one critical look at the ensemble you were wearing and simply remarked “you’re not wearing that, are you?”. While this indecisiveness appear to be epidemic for New Years Eve parties, the company holiday party, and assorted other celebrations of friends and families, thus far a bridal shower has not really ranked as an event that required a special kind of attire. Nonetheless, don’t you wish somebody would have given you a hint as to what kind of dress would be appropriate? Perhaps it is time for this to change! After all, you have spent a lot of time coming up with the perfect bridal shower theme, so why not go all the way and choose your bridal shower attire accordingly?

For example, if you are planning a bridal shower for your friend who will be going to Hawaii on her honeymoon, why not make the theme, as well as the attire, a Hawaiian celebration? Guests could wear Hawaiian shirts, dresses, perhaps even grass skirts! On the other hand, if the bride will be going surfing, why not dress in the height of California surfer fashion, complete with bleached blond wig and cut out surf board? As you can see, the possibilities for bridal shower attire are truly endless and guests as well as the bride will be able to capitalize on the individuality of the bride, her planned honeymoon, or simply the interests her and the groom share. If you are more formally oriented, or if the shower will be held at a formal location, you may wish to stay with the conservative ensemble of a skirt and blouse, or perhaps a pair of dressy slacks and a nice blouse. Depending on the kind of bridal shower you are planning for the bride to be, it is imperative to communicate the propriety of attire to the shower guests. As a matter of fact, there are actually some commonly understood “buzz words” that get the point across without getting into too much detail.

If you will be having a fancy party at a luxury restaurant, please be sure to include on the invitation that the dress should be “cocktail attire.” This signals to the invitee that this is the equivalent of a black tie affair, and she will know to get the little black dress off the hanger and pressed. This is especially appropriate for exclusive restaurants or hotels.

If the party is not held at the ritziest place in town but a close second runner up, please be sure to specify “evening resort attire.” This simply means an alternative to the little black dress, such as a nice conservative yet festive dress or skirt and blouse.

Once step down from this occasion would be “business casual” or “resort attire.” This is most appropriate if the party is held at the local country club. Shorts, skorts, and even short skirts are appropriate, if they are properly cut and fit well. This is not the time for the bargain basement mini skirt!

As you can see, questions of fashionable attire are entirely appropriate when considering attending or hosting a bridal shower. If you are fortunate enough to be hosting one, please take the guests’ guess work out of the equation, and instead let them know how to dress for the occasion! On the other hand, if you are on the guest list of a bridal shower, be sure to ask if there will be a dress code. Most often you will be able to glean this bit of information when taking a look at the location of the event, but in case you are unfamiliar with the venue, a quick phone call to the hostess will clear up any questions and prevent embarrassing misunderstandings.
